Repost from @choybot of my sketchbook pages for {In the Process} show at Hellion Gallery opening this Thursday! This was my second batch as the awesome institution that is USPS lost my original sketchbook.

Also on the same street, on the other side, i'll be participating in a fun show titled In the Process,

(whom i incidentally met through Compound Gallery 6 years ago), at Hellion Gallery.

Some peeks of the process :
Taking too long to finish... And losing steam. Doodling this instead of finishing the painting. Peek of the little pieces for the May show (in Portland). Last night's hairy mess. Part of my lil series getting ready to be shipped out to Portland. And these hairy people too (going out to PDX - peek of the Daydreamers show, May 2) Accordion sketchbook (handmade by @choybot!) for a sketchbook show next month - my most favorite thing to work on to date!! The other side of the accordion sketchbook for a show in may in Portland.

So this is it for a while!

i'll be taking a small break this year from gallery shows (except for a couple more group shows in the fall**)
for some personal time and focusing on some other projects mostly - so please check my Facebook/twitter/instagram/blog
for that if you want to know what's going on...
It'll be a very wabi-sabi kind of process, if that makes any sense - going with the flow of things
- there is an image but no particular plans, so to speak.

i will hopefully be keeping up more with my shop with small originals and prints,
and maybe some other products (perhaps a new shop too?!!) instead.

See you in Portland!!!

** ok i lied, i realized that i'm in another group show in Philly, May 11th, with Thinkspace Gallery curating for Gallery 309 - although it'll be my older pieces.

so glad to start the new year in such good company (in spirit, at least).
the show opens tomorrow, and runs till February 20th.

Feb 2 - 20th, 2013
Opening Saturday, February 2nd, 2013
6:30-10:00 PM
2065 Sawtelle Blvd

Serpentine. 9.25" x 11.75". Watercolor and Acrylic on Tea-stained Paper. ©2013.

i've been painting a lot with watercolor lately, and having been wanting to get some tea-stained pieces done,
i decided to start with the first piece of 2013. hopefully i portrayed enough of the snakiness in an abstract way.

happy new year (belated for 2013, early for Lunar new year next weekend)!!!

Another Mini Shop Sale on Saturday!

{{ 2nd/Mini Studio Sale }} this Saturday, December 15th, 2PM eastern time!

thanks for "coming" for a peek or a purchase for my last studio sale a couple weekends ago!
i was so surprised at how fast they flew off the shelf, thanks to you all.

so i'm having another super low budget sale this weekend - very last minute but hope you can make it!

Saturday, December 15th
2pm EST

this time, it will be mostly post-it notes for those who couldn't make it to Giant Robot's
8th annual post-it drawing show in LA, or for those who did go there but didn't end up procuring one
after standing in line for hours!

because of the scanning/packing/shipping process, the post-its will be $30-35 instead, but hopefully
that will still remain affordable originals for many (cheaper than some of my prints!).

i'll also have a few ink study pieces and maybe a half finished study painting listed as well.
thank you and "see" you this weekend in the shop!

i'll be holding my annual Small Originals Studio Sale (like in '10 & twice in '11) this saturday!

Saturday, December 1st

although due to many personal tasks i had to tend to this year, i don't that many pieces as in the
past - but probably around 15-20 pieces, perhaps - so please mark your calendars!

i might be doing another small sale the weekend after, of post-it notes for those who can't make it to
Giant Robot's 8th annual post-it drawing show (where each piece is $25, cash-and- carry) in LA.

................................................................................................................

Borrowed Memories : 2-person show, October 2012

October 2012 opening with Tran Nguyen & Stella Im Hultberg + Jeremy Hush + Michael Ramstead
{ title wall photo by sam graham }

finally getting around to posting about my show, Borrowed Memories, with Tran Nguyen, at Thinkspace Gallery that opened back in September!

20 Pieces of Dreams, group show

20 Pieces of Dreams, group show at GR2!

opening this saturday is this amazing show that i'm so sad to be missing out on (for not being there),
celebrating young Sena's 20th birthday (curated by her awesome mom!)

Mari gathered 11 of her friends, along with herself and Sena, to round up a group show consisting of
20 works total (one each from all the friends, and 9 from mother & daughter).
what a really amazing way to celebrate a daughter's birthday!!

and here's my piece for the show :
StellaImHultberg_Crescere_GR2
Crescere. 11.75" x 11.5" . Acrylic & Colored Pencil on Hand-cut Wood. © 2012.

i know i have yet to upload the last show's batch of works (i just have to edit them first),
but here is my last piece of the year!
i made this piece at the same time i did the wood cut works for that show, though just finished recently for this one.
it was fun to use the negative space/shape and work in delicate shapes for once...
and inspired me to make some textile works (in the future, still in the works).

the title Crescere is a latin word meaning to grow - i remember being 20 and feeling like anything is
possible, with the whole future wide ahead of me. i hope Sena's 20s will be even more growing and fulfilling for her!

hope you get to go to this awesome party of a show, and enjoy all the fun works in an intimate setting of GR2! :)

summer

..:: massive photo dump warning ::..

{ summer play }
fort tilden. bike ride.

there hasn't been much going on here fun-wise. in the past couple years i haven't been much
of an NYC summer fan, and i'm glad it's subsiding and we're going into fall...
most of the summer has been spent on working... experimenting...
and instagramming in lieu of blogging, apparently.
and lazy blogging by clustering all the accumulated instagram photos. yikes!! >_<

4th of july on the 17th floor, upper west side.

hanging on our roof.

creepy cat.

silly cat.

some backyard dining on cooler evenings.

{ around the studio }

{ rambles / thoughts}

lots of different kinds of works this summer - most of june, i took a break from my regular
kind of works and did some fun projects for myself.
the wire sculptures seen above are my Ruth Asawa studies.
because i'm very slow, it only took me ages to figure out her techniques (kind of). and i already
knew how to knit and crochet. :/
this reset my eyes and my mind to start some new works - i feel like i finally started to reconcile
some deeper rooted ideas and interests of my own within my work so far... maybe. it's something
i've struggled with in the past couple years.

something about the mathematical nature of the wire looping got me going on geometric shapes
(which i've always loved and appreciated but didn't quite take enough bold steps to incorporate
into my own works) got me started on some other geometric forms and shapes - 3d and 2d both.
having been obsessed with the wire looping for weeks, it was hard to start painting again in 2d.
which is why i started with some wood-cut shapes to draw and paint on.
a compromise, in a way.

thinking and working through all this, i feel that i have a new vision for new possibilities - still
incubating and marinating in my head, but there are some new ideas and projects afloat in my
head. can't wait for the fall/winter/spring!!

+ all works seen above are mostly for my shows in the fall - 2-person show, Borrowed Memories,
at Thinkspace Gallery with the amazing Tran Nguyen.
then a group show curated by Mari Inukai at GR2 for her daughter's 20th birthday.
